I would say, please DON’T.
That’s right. I’m very aware that it may seem silly coming from a digital marketing consultant. It’s absurd coming from someone who persuades people about the power of social media every single day. But I stand my ground. Please do NOT attempt to sell on social media!
Why?
Well, it’s pretty simple. Do you LOVE watching commercials? Do you HATE that Netflix and other streaming services allow you to watch content without interruptions? Does your heart skip a beat when you see “Content will restart after ad”? If you answered YES to any of these questions, then don’t mind me; please do go back to the world where you’re persuaded to buy at every turn. But chances are you, like me, appreciate good commercials; but you’d rather see them in YouTube if they’re interesting enough (like the SuperBowl commercials for example).
So why is it that even though we dislike people trying to sell to us all the time, we’ve plagued social media with sales pitches, leads, ads, etc.?
Simple. We learned that it was an awesome media platform, and conventional marketers tried to take over influencers and their business model. But, here’s where we went wrong, and those who skip our ads got it right.
Social media is NOT about selling, it is about ENGAGING!
Social media was created to connect with other human beings and share information about their thoughts, plans, and personal activities. That’s precisely what led to the boom of social media. It was made by users for users, and then brands got in the way. But, we can all gladly invite brands, public figures, and businesses into the game; IF and only IF they play by the rules.
They all need to develop content that interests users enough for them to engage. Once they got that, they can ask us to buy and give something back to them.
So if you ask me: “How do I sell on social media?”. The answer is still… Please DON’T!
Do not try to sell, try to connect.
Find the people who will be interested in your product, service, or personality; and once you found them woo them with content that brings value to their lives, and to social media. And guess what? That’s how you sell on social media!
If you know someone who’s trying to learn “How to sell on social media”, please share this content with them. Thanks!
Brilliant, Ana!
In the middle of chasing our dreams, we forgot to allow others to have theirs.
Many forgot what social media is really for.
Thanks for the reminder 🙂
Thank you for this great article. You are so right! Who loves ads? Nobody!
As it usually happens, we just need to step into the other’s shoes.
